Camden Garden Club Begins Maintenance of Village Green

A lovely day for the first spring clean-up session brought 7 members of the Camden Garden Club to the Village Green on Tuesday,  May 6 2008, to begin beautifying the planting beds.  The Garden Club will continue maintenance of the Village Green beds thoughout the summer.

Pictured here are Sherry Cobb, Judith Tarbox, Judy McGuirk, Sally Fernald,  Jan Blick, Joan Bennett, and Maureen O'Donnell.

The Camden Garden Club's 91st year began on a beautiful day with the annual luncheon in June held at the Camden Yacht Club.  This event starts the season with handing over the gavel and responsibilities to newly appointed officers, the introduction of scholarship recipients, and the showing of awards received during the past year.  There was high praise for outgoing president Molly Foster as she turned over the meeting to incoming president Priscilla Granston.

Three scholarships for 2006 were awarded to high school graduates who are pursuing careers in environmental studies and landscape design & operations at various colleges.  Tanglewood 4-H Camp in Lincolnville also received a scholarship which aided two local youths attending the summer session.

Camden Garden Club received five awards at the Maine Federation's annual convention held in Bar Harbor in June 2006:  CGFM 75th Anniversary Presidential Certificate in appreciation of Club Projects & Programs, CGFM Club of Distinction Certificate for accomplishments in all areas of garden club activities, first place GCFM Yearbook Award, first place GCFM Press Book Award, and New England Region honorable mention NGC Publicity Press Book Award.

Camden Garden Club's main event and only fundraiser is its Annual House and Garden Tour.  The 2006 event took place on July 20th.  The picture-perfect day drew a record number of visitors from coast to coast and comments on the 8 homes and gardens were very positive.  Money raised from this tour help fund the many community projects in Camden including the beautiful flower baskets
that hang on the town lamp posts in spring, summer and fall
along with several flower boxes throughout town, the planting
and maintaining of the beds at the Village Green, funding for
annual scholarships, and donation of funds to other charitable
organizations in town.  Annually on the Monday before Thanksgiving club members and spouses assemble the Christmas wreaths that adorn the town lamp posts during the holiday season and winter months.  Tuesday mornings at the Lord Camden Inn from January 20 through February 27, 2007, the club will hold its annual Horticultural Program meetings featuring guest speakers from Maine.  All are welcome to attend.

At the present time membership totals 143.  In memoriam are Leone Alexander, Fran Parker, Dot Smith, Jane Marks, and Lela Steele.
