Garden Path Through the Woods

The Buxton Garden Club was organized by a group of 10 ladies interested in gardening in 1944 and became federated in 1945. It is one of the eight charter members of the Garden Club Federation of Maine. Today we have grown to 33 members who are still very interested in all aspects of gardening. Our club has been experiencing growing pains as our community slowly becomes a suburb of Portland. We have added new members every year for the last four years. We have a very active out reach program and that is why we believe we have grown so. Each year at our Perennial sale in the spring we have a sign up sheet for anyone interested in joining. We then have a “private” garden tour for these prospective members. We have also started a quarterly newsletter. Another facet that has helped us to stay in touch with new members is the frequent use of e-mail for quick communications. Our activities may include: Garden Tours (we sponsor one in the even numbered years); Perennial sale; maintenance of garden sites through out the community; developing and maintaining a Woodland Walk at the municipal building; Festival of Trees; decorating community buildings for the holidays. We also sponsor a $300 scholarship at Bonny Eagle High School each year.
