Scholarships

A Gift for a Lifetime

GCFM believes in supporting education. Horticulture-based education is supported by the Garden Club Federation of Maine, GCFM Districts and GCFM local garden clubs. It is today’s students that will be the leaders of tomorrow, ensuring the preservation of our natural resources of the planet Earth.  Applicants majoring in: Horticulture, Floriculture, Landscape Design, Conservation, Forestry, Botany, Agronomy, Plant Pathology, Environmental Concerns, Ecology, Land Management and other/or other garden fields.

The GCFM Horticulture Scholarship is awarded to college juniors and seniors or graduate students who are legal residents of the State of Maine and not related to a GCFM Board Member. (College sophomores are eligible as they will be entering their junior year the following fall.) The Scholarship recipient is invited to attend the GCFM Annual Meeting and Awards luncheon at the State Convention held in June.

Application Guidelines: GCFM Application, Personal letter by applicant (one page only), List of extra-curricular activities, Three letters of recommendation (Scholarship ability, Personal, Work-related) The NGC application and documentation should also be submitted with the GCFM application information.  NGC application and requirements can be found on the NGC website. 

Attached with Application: Grade transcript, References, Financial Aid Form (signed by Financial Aid Officer). 

Complete forms and information can be obtained from your Financial Aid Office. 

Applicants will be judged on the following:

1) Aptitude in the field of horticulture

2) Academic Record

3) Avocational interests and vocational potential

4) Character

5) Financial Need

The Mary Lou Marks Smith Scholarship is awarded to a community college student majoring in horticulture, floral design or other gardening related fields who is a legal resident of the State of Maine. The Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, will be given every other year, in odd numbered years. It is mailed to the college at the beginning of the second semester.

Financial aid is available for students who are pursuing a career related to gardening, landscape design, environmental issues, floral design or horticulture at an accredited College/University.

Application forms must be received by the Scholarship Chairman by February 1st. Application forms must be typed or computer generated.

Scholarship Funding

Give a "Gift that Lasts a Lifetime” by becoming a GCFM State Life Member, an Honorary State Life Member, or an NGC (National) Life Member.  Memorial Gifts in memory of a garden club member, a friend, or family member may also be made to support our educational efforts.  Donations for State Life Membership, Honorary State Life Membership, or Memorial Gifts are payable to the GCFM Scholarship Fund. Donors can be proud that he or she has helped send a Maine student to college. 

To become an NGC Life Member a fee of $200 paid to the National Garden Club, Inc. is required.  This donation also goes to fund scholarships awarded to students from around the country.  For more information click this link to the NGC website.

GCFM Honorary Life Member:  may be accorded to an individual who is not a member of a garden club upon request with a donation of $50.00 payable to the GCFM Scholarship Fund.  Any member of the GCFM may sponsor an individual for an Honorary Life Membership.

GCFM State Life Member: may be accorded to any member of the GCFM with a donation of $50.00 made payable to the GCFM Scholarship Fund for yourself, a friend, to recognize an outgoing officer, and/or a garden club member who has contributed much to the goals and projects of GCFM.

Memorial Gifts: may be made in any amount payable to the GCFM Scholarship Fund.  Your gift will be acknowledged by our Scholarship Chairman and notification can be made to the family of the person for whom  the gift was made.

GCFM Districts and local Federated Garden Clubs offer financial aid to students pursuing a career in horticulture. Go to the Clubs section for a club in your area offering scholarships.   Support the GCFM by filling out one of our donation forms today!
