OK! You’ve made sure your garden is ready to face another Maine winter. But the next question is—are you ready to face the prospect of a long cold season spent indoors grabbing the nearest "comfort food” (chocolate bar, anyone?)

At this year’s Fall Conference (Tuesday, October 27th at the Augusta Civic Center) we’re going to take a totally different look at your vegetable garden and see if you can put it to better use to make you feel better! Join us as we hear from Dr. Timothy Howe of Brunswick’s Parkview Hospital on how he’s changed the lives of many of his patients by encouraging them to embrace a plant-based diet. Dr. Howe, an internist who’s practiced for almost three decades, also serves as the medical director of the wellness department at Parkview Hospital. He launched the Lifestyle Choices program in 1995 as a way to reach out not only to his own patients, but the local community as well to show them how a plant-based diet could help solve many of their underlying chronic health problems.

Dr. Howe will also talk to us about the importance of growing vegetables in a healthy soil. He’ll talk about how what you put in your soil eventually ends up in the food you grow. We’ll find out how the health of your soil may be impacting your own health.

Now that we’ve got you pointed down the road to possibly eating better this winter, how about trying something new—like kelp or seaweed! Paul Dobbins, President of Ocean Approved, will introduce us to his open-ocean kelp and seaweed farms. Sea vegetables, as they’re also known, are the new trend in eating a healthier diet.

Calling his kelp "the virtuous vegetable,” Paul will have samples of both kelp and a seaweed salad for all attendees to try. On their website you’ll find a variety of recipes for entrees, appetizers, salads and even desserts that use their kelp and seaweed products.

So—have we piqued your interest in attending this year’s Fall Conference?
