Conservation

Preserving and Nurturing our Bio-Indicators

The theme of our National Garden Club President for the next two years is to try and reverse the population decline in our amphibian and pollinator species, particularly in frog, bees and Monarch butterflies. Each of these species have been challenged by both manmade and natural factors. This reminds us that we all need to be aware we can make a difference in the world if we make the right choices. The Conservation Pledge, which plays an integral role in the mission of the GCFM, emphasizes our efforts to protect the natural resources of our world. Participation by our many clubs in projects that promote conservation are encouraged.

Some of the ways our clubs are promoting conservation include:

  • Growing plants that promote the conservation of pollinator habitat
  • Planting milkweed to provide food for the endangered monarch butterfly
  • Hosting public programs on the issue of the increased acidification of our rivers, lakes and bays
  • Planting native plants and ridding our landscape of problem invasive plants
  • Hosting public programs on how to protect the native habitat of our wildlife
  • Disseminating information on public resources and affiliated organizations that promote conservation
