SUMMARY:ZOOM PRESENTATION - Beneficial Insects - Plants and Practices
DESCRIPTION:GCFM members are invited to join a ZOOM presentation by Zac Smith-Hess of Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens on “Beneficial Insects-Plants and Practices”. \nWith all the buzz around bees\, it can be easy to overlook other essential pollinators and insects that share our garden spaces. Beetles\, flies\, wasps\, and spiders are just a few of the more hidden beneficial arthropods that may be found in your space. Though pollination is a crucial contribution of these insects\, pollinators form just one level of the garden ecosystem. We can also plant and landscape to create habitats for predators\, reducing the need for chemical pesticides. Together with the charismatic bees and butterflies\, these critters support any managed ecosystem. \nZac Smith-Hess is the entomologist educator at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and has had a long-term passion for connecting people and places using insects. Since graduating with a degree in zoology in 2014\, he has spent much of his career as a formal and informal educator in zoos\, gardens\, and parks. Zac manages the Learning Apiary’s honeybee hives and co-manages the Native Butterfly & Moth House\, where he engages thousands of Gardens visitors every summer or\, as he likes to say\, just talks about bugs. \nThere is no cost for this presentation\, however\, registration is required to obtain the ZOOM link for the program.  RSVP to Leslie Spieth (President’s Project Chair) at lespieth97@gmail.com with your name\, garden club\, and email address.  Registration deadline for this program is February 23rd.

SUMMARY:Choosing The Right Plants - ZOOM or In-Person
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Garden Club\, in collaboration with the Camden Public Library\, invite you to attend their Winter Horticulture Series\, Re-Visioning Your Garden: Talks About Landscape Design\, Tuesday mornings from Jan. 27th to Feb. 24th. Attend in person at the Camden Public Library or join via ZOOM. You must register in advance for in-person or online attendance CLICK TO REGISTER . \nA landscape designer and advocate for green infrastructure\, Sharon Turner of Crystal Lake Farm and Nursery will share her insights on designing gardens that are both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally responsible. \nSharon will show participants how to select plants that are best suited for the gardens they are designing. \nThe land that is now Crystal Lake Farm & Nursery has been in Sharon’s family for almost 70 years. In 1955\, when Sharon was 10\, her father purchased a former boys’ camp and the family moved from Connecticut to the old farmhouse on her current property. For the next six years\, Sharon and her family lived the country life\, learning about nature\, raising livestock\, and growing bountiful gardens. In 1961\, the family moved to Brunswick. \nAlthough the farm stayed in the family\, the house and land remained largely unoccupied until 1995 when Sharon’s son Eli built a cabin and moved to the farm. He spent the next five years (and more) restoring the land\, using low-impact methods to manage the woodlands and reclaim open spaces for buildings\, fields\, and gardens. \n\n\n\nIn 2004\, Eli built a cabin for Sharon and the seed for Crystal Lake Farm & Nursery was planted. For the past 20 years\, mother and son have worked together to build their business and act as stewards of this small piece of Maine. \n

SUMMARY:Using Hardscape - ZOOM or In-Person
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Garden Club\, in collaboration with the Camden Public Library\, invite you to attend their Winter Horticulture Series\, Re-Visioning Your Garden: Talks About Landscape Design\, Tuesday mornings from Jan. 27th to Feb. 24th. Attend in person at the Camden Public Library or join via ZOOM. You must register in advance for in-person or online attendance CLICK TO REGISTER . \nEmma Kelly will talk about how to use hardscape to complement and enhance the natural beauty of our yards. Emma’s work is driven by a joyful embrace of the design process – from site investigation to team collaboration\, from sketch exploration to successful implementation. She’s a fierce advocate for place-specific design and team-built success. Emma’s projects find her interacting with complex networks of design and engineering professionals\, local craftsmen\, and regionally-sourced materials. Emma sees her role as steering a creative conversation with clients and properties to building unique landscapes that fit unique goals. Practicing primarily in Maine and focusing on residential landscapes\, Emma believes deeply in the power of place-making: the ability to shape the spaces around us into crucibles for future meaning and memories. \nIn her first 10 years of professional practice\, Emma honed her technical and managerial skills on large-scale environmental-\, public-\, and institutionally-focused projects throughout the US with Hargreaves Associates\, and moved to more intimately scaled regionally-sensitive and context-specific design working with Richardson & Associates. In 2013\, Emma formed Emma Kelly Landscape LLC as an exciting new outlet for her passion and her recent work can be seen in publications such as Maine Home & Design and the Boston Globe Magazine. Even more recently\, Emma launched ColLab\, a collaborating laboratory of five independent\, women-owned landscape architecture practices working on projects throughout the Northeast.  As a founding principal of this groundbreaking new organization\, Emma is eager to capture the synergy of working with stellar peers who can drive the creative focus of projects further and support even more complex and far-reaching project needs. \nEmma received her master’s degree in Landscape Architecture\, with distinction\, from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University\, as well as her undergraduate degree in Cultural Anthropology and Religion. She has shared her love of design and the design process through studio instructor\, visiting critic\, and design jury roles at design and horticultural programs from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design to Southern Maine Community College.

SUMMARY:The Layered Garden - ZOOM Only Presentation
DESCRIPTION:The Camden Garden Club\, in collaboration with the Camden Public Library\, invite you to attend their Winter Horticulture Series\, Re-Visioning Your Garden:  Talks About Landscape Design\, Tuesday mornings from Jan. 27th to Feb. 24th.  Attend this presentation via a “Watch Party” at the Camden Town Office or join via ZOOM.  You must register in advance for in-person or online attendance  CLICK TO REGISTER .   \nDavid Culp will show us how to recreate the majestic display of his beloved two-acre Pennsylvania garden\, Brandywine Cottage. He will offer an important lesson in layering—how to choose the correct plants by understanding how they grow and change throughout the seasons\, how to design a layered garden\, and tips on maintaining it. To illustrate how layering works\, David will take you on a virtual tour through each part of his celebrated garden. The lecture culminates with his signature plants for all four seasons. \n\n\nDavid is Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Cavano’s Perennials. He is also the creator of the gardens at Brandywine Cottage in Downingtown\, Pennsylvania\, which are listed in the Smithsonian Institution/Archives of American Gardens. The gardens have been featured on television and in numerous magazine publications. David is the principal of David L. Culp Designs\, owner of the galanthus nursery Brandywine Snowdrops\, and the developer of the Brandywine hybrid strain of hellebores. David has been lecturing about gardens nationwide for over 25 years\, and teaches about growing herbaceous perennials at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square\, Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\n\nDavid is the author of The Layered Garden\, which won a Gold Medal from the Garden Writers Association for Best Overall Book of the Year. His new book\, A Year at Brandywine Cottage: Six Seasons of Beauty\, Bounty and Blooms\, takes the reader further\, detailing how more than 30 years of creating his sensational year-round garden has provided an abundance of joy\, both indoors and out\, whether it’s choosing plants for twelve months of interest\, weaving edibles into the mix\, or bringing the bounty indoors with simple arrangements and homegrown recipes.
