SUMMARY:Evergreen Garden Club Annual Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Come to beautiful Deer Isle for this annual plant sale! Master Gardeners and experienced Evergreen Garden Club members will be on hand to answer your gardening questions. Plants available will include perennials\, herbs\, vegetable and flower seedlings\, fruit trees and strawberry plants\, and houseplants. It is the same weekend as the Island Heritage Trust “Wings\, Waves and Woods Festival”\, a popular birding event; and a great time to explore Deer Isle! \nIn the past\, most of the proceeds from the sale have gone to maintaining the 23 ½ acre Mariners Memorial Park in Deer Isle\, which is owned and maintained by the garden club and open to the public. This year\, the proceeds from the raffle portion of the sale will be going directly to the new Evergreen Endowment Fund through the Maine Community Foundation. The fund is meant to help pay for the annual maintenance costs of insurance\, mowing\, and road maintenance in the park. It is hoped that this fund will free up other monies for the club to do more within the community beyond the bounds of the park. \nRain location is Deer Isle Town Hall\, next door.

DESCRIPTION:GCFM members from around the state are invited to Open Garden Day for 2024 (yes\, just one day this year!).  Two Cape Elizabeth gardens\, owned by club members\, will be open for you to browse and enjoy from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  As in past years\, attendees should bring their own lunches and beverages\, plus a chair.  Dress casually and appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes/sneakers for walking.  There will be registration tables at both gardens where you will receive name badges and information about the day’s events.   Members may bring their non-member friends\, but non-members need to accompany a member to attend.  There is a suggested donation of $10 for the day.  Both gardens are accessible to able bodied members\, however\, wheelchairs and wheeled walkers would be a problem and there are steep steps at points in the Zimmerman gardens.  There will be GCFM directional signs starting in the center of Cape Elizabeth (beginning at the town hall on Route 77).  Note that you may visit either garden first. \n  \nFEATURED GARDENS\nDebbie and Jim Schulz reside at 4 Winding Way.  They are working to renovate their gardens by planting natives.  They are reducing their lawn and experimenting with native plants as foundation plantings as well.  Recently they added a couple of mini meadows\, a native grass border\, and a winter interest border with mostly native plants.  A small wildlife pond has also been added.  The couple does their own gardening and has a more casual approach to weeds and leaves.  They raise many of their native plants from seed and will be glad to show their seedlings. \nJanie and Barry Zimmerman live at 4 Hunts Point Rd.  They also have a large lot\, large house and garage\, and have large gardens on both side borders of their lot.  The backyard has some gardens\, but the ocean comes up to the lot edge\, which cuts down on garden space\, and the backyard is quite shady.  After attending a Cape Elizabeth Garden Club program on planting veggies in flower gardens\, Janie wants to plant vegetables in their front gardens this year because that is the sunny side of their lot (you can see their progress!). \n  \nPROGRAMS FOR THE DAY\n11 A.M..in the SCHULZ GARDEN\nAndrew Tufts from Maine Audubon will present “Bringing Nature Home to Maine”.  Andrew is the Bringing Nature Home Manager at Maine Audubon\, dedicated to restoring and rebuilding Maine’s natural biodiversity by growing\, distributing and planting the native wildflowers\, shrubs and trees that support the widest array of wildlife.  Originally from Topsham\, Maine\, Andrew has a deep\nappreciation for the outdoors.  With a background in landscape architecture\, he has diverse experience\, from owning a gardening business to working in city planning and landscape design. Outside of work\, Andrew enjoys travel\, cycling and outdoor activities.  He currently resides in Portland\, Maine\, with his wife Anna and daughter Annika.  Andrew’s presentation should take about an hour. \n1 P.M. in the ZIMMERMAN GARDEN\nFollowing an hour’s lunch break\, two GCFM members will use garden flowers and various containers to make floral arrangements that will be given away at the end of their program.  Sabrina Warner\, a well-known flower arranger who is a St. Mary’s Garden Club member\, will join Molly Foster\, a National Garden Clubs Master Flower Show Judge and member of Camden Garden Club\, and the two will discuss flowers – how to grow them\, what to cut and what not to cut\, how to arrange them\, and so on.  Their presentation will also take about an hour and will include time for questions. \nNOTE:  NO PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.  EVENT IS OPEN TO GCFM MEMBERS AND THEIR GUESTS ONLY.

SUMMARY:Lawns Into Meadows: Growing a Regenerative Landscape ~ With Owen Wormser
DESCRIPTION:Lawns are the largest irrigated ‘crop’ in the country and the adverse impact of their ecological footprint is truly staggering.  Meadows offer the opposite effect\, providing myriad ecological benefits–including ongoing sequestering of carbon and significantly increased biological diversity. Join us for a ZOOM presentation with Owen Wormser.  He will discuss the benefits of native meadows while also explaining how to create thriving meadowscapes\, sharing tips and strategies drawn from research and over 20 years of on-the-ground experience. \n\nGCFM Members – There is no charge for this program\, but YOU MUST REGISTER and provide your email to get the link for the ZOOM presentation.\nNon-GCFM Members – You will need to pay a $10 fee for the link.\n\n\n \n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Email*\n \n Member status:*\n \n \n GCFM Club Member\n \n \n \n Non-GCFM Member\n Email or Mobile NumberEmail or Mobile Number of PayPal account being used for paymentGarden ClubDistrictNon-GCFM Member\n \n \n Price:\n \n \n \n Total\n \n Payment MethodPayPal Checkout\n MasterCardVisaSupported Credit Cards: MasterCard\, Visa\n \n Card Number\n \n \n \n Expiration Date\n \n \n                                                 \n Security Code\n \n \n \n Cardholder Name

SUMMARY:GCFM Open Garden #3 - Cape Neddick
DESCRIPTION:Join GCFM members from across the state for our third and final Open Garden of the year in Cape Neddick. Former GCFM president\, Becky Linney\, is opening her property\, the former Groundnut Hill Nurseries Inc.\, created by her late husband David Linney\, as a wholesale business supplying hardy woody and ornamental plant material for the green industry in Maine and New Hampshire. This former nursery\, established in 1972\, now has fields with mature trees\, shrubs\, perennial plantings\, garden rooms\, and rolling landscapes in harmony with natural and designed granite hardscapes. The newest project is a new parterre garden using granite\, iron architectural salvage\, and crushed stone. \nThe morning session will feature floral design demonstrations by Helene Lewand\, owner of Blackrock Farm in Kennebunkport\, and Dianne Bullock\, past president of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts. The afternoon speakers will be from the Seacoast Horticultural Society\, organized in 2011 by a group of regional horticultural professionals from NHLA\, NHCLP\, UNH\, NENA\, and MELNA. \nCome rain or shine! Barns on the property will provide cover. A donation of $10 is requested for GCFM. Driving directions will be sent in a reminder email closer to the date.  Bring a chair\, lunch\, and water. Please dress appropriately for walking and exploring the property\, according to the forecast. Bring your boots\, sunscreen\, and insect and tick repellent! Enjoy the day with gardeners from across the state!
